Trigger warning! This includes: Childhood trauma, xenophobia, sexual assault, family violence.
This is the only experiment that I truly wish would never happen to anyone as it happened to me. Now some people will say: "Oh, this person is sharing this fictional story just to get attention." No. This is real. And of course, no one would believe it because of how traumatic this is.
It all starts when I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. I was safe there, but not safe at the same time. When I was a child, I was subjected to multiple violence and harassment at school by Saudi students and teachers because I'm from Yemen. Not just at school, I was also subjected to hit-and-run incidents in the parks. I believed that people here don't care about mental health or safety. The xenophobia here was huge.
I learned English at a young age and decided to talk to American or foreign people. Unfortunately, there is no safe place on social media apps or online games either. I get attacked almost every day by the most horrifying and vile words from people, whether because of my religion, race, or age. I always blame myself and say that it's my fault I got myself into situations like this. But at least I have all the basic human necessities, which is enough.
And here's the most crushing part: me and my family had to move to Yemen after high fees were imposed on foreigners in 2018. I felt like I got hit by a speeding train. I cried a lot. I was just 14 years old. 14. A child. I wasn't ready for this. I didn't even get to say goodbye to my friends.
Me and my family started moving to Yemen in early January 2019. After we got to Sana'a (the capital of Yemen), I didn't even know how life works there. I started the second term of 8th grade at a typical school right after moving. I was attacked by my classmates after they found out I came from Saudi Arabia. They thought I was Saudi. And I kept getting bad grades on my tests because I didn't even know how the education system worked there.
But that's not the worst part. The worst part is these conditions: unstable Wi-Fi, constant electricity outages, high prices, failed school systems, and constant gunfire sounds that stun your soul. This affected me and my family so much that domestic abuse became constant in my family.
After living in Sana'a for seven months, we moved to Aden (south Yemen) as we decided to finally live there. But that's not the end, because trauma became my daily routine. I didn't even know anything about Yemeni life and culture, which made me be laughed at by many people.
So a month and 15 days after moving here, I started 9th grade at a private school. I got to know my classmates and my teachers. Throughout the whole year, I really had beautiful memories with them, and painful memories. Why painful? Because I played the "idiot" role without even realizing it. Boys were humiliating me to make others laugh so I could stay silent. Girls jokingly insulted me after I did stupid things, such as throwing pencils for no reason, bouncing from one desk to another, eating my lunch during class, which caused teachers to yell very hard at my face for that, or humiliate me in front of the class.
Looking back at these moments, I've been thinking: why would I do such stupid stuff and make people angry at me or laugh at me? Was it because I was in pain? Was it because I was already hurting, so I did these things to make myself feel "seen"?
After going to high school, people here weren't welcoming at all, even outside school. They denied my identity just because of my appearance and my accent. They said, "You're not from here." And many of them asked me, "You could have stayed in Saudi Arabia. Why did you come here?" They made me feel like I was not welcomed here either.
Also, I was subjected to several sexual assaults by older people in high school and strangers. Yes. Sexual assaults. In addition to family violence, humanitarian crisis, and civil conflicts. All at once. Life here is a hellhole that makes you feel like you don't want to wake up ever again. There were a few psychiatrists here, but I couldn't even reach one, either in person or online, because of how restricted my life was. I haven't taken a single medication for stress or anxiety until NOW. Even after seven years in this country. I wouldn't even dare to waste my life here.
So here's the change that is a miracle: in January 2025, I decided to learn Japanese, learn about the culture, make Japanese friends online, and look for scholarships for a master's degree. I'm a third-year student in university now. I just turned 22 years old yesterday. Right now, I'm still suffering from family violence in my home which makes me feel like I'm a bird in a cage who's only allowed to drink 2 water drops a day. I lost seven years to fear, violence, and trauma. Which can seem like a scar on my brain, but I'll never stop chasing my dream. It's the only fire that tells me there is still hope. It tells me there's more than this pain. And here I am, still breathing, still fighting, and I'll do whatever it takes.
And I would love to thank @mentalhealthjapan so much for giving me the opportunity to share my experience. It really does give the unheard a voice to be heard.
